Winners will receive maximum exposure in the Photography & Illustration Awards issue of the magazine, published in May/June 2011, as well as on our online winners gallery (visited by more than 300,000 visitors annually).
This year, our esteemed international panel of judges consists of 10 highly regarded industry professionals:
Design Director, Teikna Design (Milan + Toronto)
Born in Rome, Claudia Neri founded Milan-based Teikna Design in 1994. One year later, she temporarily relocated to Toronto, where she still maintains an active presence. Believing that small is beautiful, with its “boutique mentality” and approach, Claudia’s Teikna has successfully worked with a diverse group of clients, large and small, on both sides of the Atlantic. Teikna is best known for producing bold, elegant work in diverse fields such as design, lifestyle brands, corporate and publishing. Claudia Neri’s work has received numerous industry awards and recognition from institutions such as AIGA (American Institute for Graphic Arts); ADCC (Advertising and Design Club of Canada); Applied Arts; Communication Arts Magazine; Coupe; GOOD DESIGN Awards, The Chicago Atheneaem Museum of Design; Graphis. Claudia is a design lecturer at Istituto Europeo di Design, Milan and Venice. Past jury duties include Cannes Lions 2008, Eurobest and New York ADC Global, 2009.
Principal, The Office of Gilbert Li (Toronto)
After several years working at renowned design studios in Toronto, Gilbert founded The Office of Gilbert Li in 2004. The studio has developed an award-winning portfolio of projects for a discerning clientele of art galleries, independent publishers, non-profit organizations and the city’s top cultural institutions. Gilbert is a member of RGD Ontario and is a director of The Advertising and Design Club of Canada.
Art Director, Bleublancrouge (Montreal)
Since joining Bleublancrouge, Sebastien has worked on campaigns for Toyota, Burger King, The Gazette, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Leucan. Although he is only 30 years old, his work has already received numerous awards, both nationally and internationally, from CLIO, One Show and Communication Arts, and at the New York Festivals, which is a testament to the quality of his work and his talent as an art director.
Creative Director, TBWA\TORONTO (Toronto)
Since entering the world of advertising in 1997 James has worked on some of Canada’s biggest brands. His work for clients such as Jeep, MADD, Wrigley, FedEX, Nissan and Pepsi has been recognized at Cannes, the One Show, D&AD, Lurzer’s Archive, The Advertising & Design Club of Canada, and the Marketing Awards.
Mark Veldhuijzen van Zanten
Associate Creative Director, TAXI Europe (Amsterdam)
Working as a graphic designer, Mark co-founded the Amsterdam-based design studio 178.nl in 1997. The successful studio belongs to the first generation of designers to give the term ‘multimedia’ new meaning. Their work is multimedia not only in the sense of using various kinds of media but also in the sense of utilizing different materials, reproduction methods and styles. Believing that design and advertising should be integrated, Mark left his company to freelance for several years as a designer and art director for major Amsterdam agencies. During this time he further honed his ideas around design and advertising, which he now mines for inspiration to meet the challenging demands for creative solutions that clients know they can expect from TAXI Europe. The talented people at TAXI are a further source of inspiration and working in this multi-disciplinary atmosphere continues to be a stimulating and rewarding experience for Mark as Associate Creative Director. He’s also a black belt – be nice to him or he’ll kick your ass.
Associate Creative Director, ELLIOT (Montreal)
As a graphic design enthausiast, Sébastien Legault founded Elliot back in 2005 along with his partner Jean-Daniel Petit and has kept pushing the envelope since then. His work for clients such as Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec and La Fondation des Auberges du Coeur, has been recognized at numerous design shows including Applied Arts, FWA and Type Directors Club.
President, Belladonna Communications (Toronto)
Victoria Foley delivers over 25 years of valuable experience and expertise in strategic brand/design. As Founder and President of belladonna communications, Victoria has set the benchmark for delivering nothing short of the best intellectual and creative solutions for building distinctive brands and resolving business challenges—creating desired perception, power and profit. She is also the Founder and CEO of Canadian Greatness® a non-profit platform that is all about Canada—connecting the public with role models, great brands and best practices for nation building and social and economic rewards.
Principal and Creative Director, DesignLab (Los Angeles)
Scott is the Principal and Creative Director of DesignLab. A Chicago native, Scott worked in senior positions for several prestigious West Coast firms before forming DesignLab in 2007. His work has been recognized by every major national and international design competition and published in over seventy books. Scott is a strong advocate of original photography and the power of illustrated imagery.
Creative Director + Editor, Modern Dog (Vancouver)
Jennifer Nosek is the Creative Director and Editor of Modern Dog magazine. She is also a writer/artist/maker of things (Little World; See) and designer (Academie) interested in process and psychological resonance. She resides in rainy East Vancouver with her boyfriend and two Dachshunds.
Associate Creative Director, Grey (Vancouver)
Geoff is the Associate Creative Director at Grey Vancouver. With many years of experience working in digital and interactive, Geoff was anxious for new challenges leading him to take the position as ACD / lead copywriter at the Vancouver based agency. Since making this move two short years ago, his work has received wide recognition from a number of international shows including The One Show, Marketing, CMA, London International and a gold lion at Cannes.
