The February/March issue of Applied Arts launches the latest evolution of the magazine, with a larger format, new design and refocused editorial coverage. Our main feature article ("The End, My Friend?") is a sweeping feature looking at how the advertising and design industries are faring amid a crumbling economy, the rising power of the Internet and falling barriers between professions.
Our Departments section highlights several articles from experts throughout the creative industry, with pieces written by writer/communications consultant Doug Dolan, typographer Rod McDonald, Due North CD Karen Howe, photographer Jim Allen, Atlantic Lottery director of marketing Scott McWilliam, and Ryan Wolman and Keith Prestwich of interactive agency henderson bas.
There’s also our Then and Now section—the beginning of a year-long continuing series—which profiles some of the names from the early days of our coverage who are still forces to be reckoned with.
Our senior writer Pamela Young launches a regular column called Design Unlimited, which looks at issues, trends and outstanding work in the larger world of design. In this issue, she examines some new one-of-a-kind wallpaper designs. Our portfolios include B.C. graphic artist Marian Bantjes and Toronto-based Doug Agency.
And last but not least is our Printing Awards section, highlighting our 2009 winners, presenting the finest printing work produced in Canada over the past year.
Single copies of the issue are available for purchase. Please contact Anna Brown at assistant@appliedartsmag.com for more details. |

When we profiled Don Dixon in 1998, the Toronto photographer had a partnership with digital retoucher Avner Levona. Since then, he has reinvented his craft, bringing in the entire spectrum of photo- and video-related offerings under one roof with the founding of Asylum Artists.
