The May/June 2013 issue of Applied Arts Magazine features the winners of our Photography & Illustration Awards, as judged by our senior panel of creative directors, designers and art directors from across Canada and the United States. Boasting one of the strongest paricipations yet, the issue is a stunning record of some of the most compelling imagery created in Canada and internationally. A true keepsake.

Our main feature, "Making the Best Quest List," looks at what it takes to get a paying gig in the rapidly expanding video-game industry. We profile Jam3, a Toronto digital agency relying on experimentation with new technologies and R&D to become a rising creative force. The Split Run portfolio, Montreal photographer and video maker John Londono, has made a name for himself by following his passions instead of a well-mapped career path. In Career Shift we offer Rick Buceta, who left his job as a successful advertising art director to open his own brewery in Queens, New York.

And again, the issue features another Layar of content. Layar specializes in mobile augmented reality, making the print world clickable. We’ve applied Layar technology to select pages in this issue of Applied Arts. Wherever you see the Layar logo, simply pass your mobile device or tablet (with the free app) over the page to check out the expanded digital content.

Single copies of the issue are available for purchase. Please contact Anna Brown at assistant@appliedartsmag.com for more details.

Main Feature: Making the Best Quest List

"Kids can be stuck in an aesthetic. A lot of our students come in very influenced by anime and other Asian styles. Breaking those habits is a challenge, so what we do on an artistic level is expose them to traditional skills like drawing, painting, sculpture and history. We really want to give them the knowledge about other media in the past. And after they take that one course, we see a big change in terms of the stylistic and thematic content."

Design Unlimited: The Art of Body

“I was in a lecture one day and the teacher was prepping us for an exam. He said that the best way to study vascular anatomy was to pretend you’re inside a vessel and make your way from that vessel to another location in the body. I thought it would be really interesting to visualize that in a more concrete way, and that a game would be a great way to do that.”

Porfolio: Jam3

“Our R&D allows us to maximize creativity within the boundaries of technical by using and experimenting with these products beforehand. When a client comes in the door, we can think of what we’ve been playing with internally and ask: Is there a way we can turn what we’ve been using into a concept for a client campaign?”

Split Run: Photographer/Video Maker John Londono

“I don’t want to feel I’m stuck in one place. The evolution of my work is what is important. When I look into the future, it’s not a bigger studio or camera or house that is important; it’s what I’ve done.”
