A Practice Rooted in Curiosity

For Andrea “Dre” Cheung, inspiration is everywhere—from the history of a place and the rhythm of a language to a fleeting moment observed while travelling. Originally from Hong Kong and now based in Montréal, the 2026 Applied Arts Illustration Awards multiple award-winner brings an inquisitive, deeply observant perspective to her work. Her illustrations are shaped by a love of storytelling and a desire to capture the character, energy and unexpected beauty of the world around her. Andrea is represented by i2i Art Inc.
“Dre” naturally curious, her fascination with history and languages—she speaks eight—has become an important part of her creative perspective, encouraging her to look closely at the places, people and details that surround her.

Travel is another constant source of inspiration. Andrea is drawn to capturing the feeling of a place rather than simply recording what it looks like. She collects sketches, recipes and stories along the way, building a personal library of observations that can resurface in her illustration practice.

That sense of discovery carries into her professional work. Andrea approaches each commission with extensive research, thoughtful sketching and strong technical skill, while placing equal importance on communication and collaboration. Her goal is not simply to deliver on a brief, but to understand it fully and find opportunities to take the work further.
Her personal practice offers a more spontaneous counterpoint. Andrea travels with a small sketchbook and pencil, using quick drawings and observation as a way to understand her surroundings. Many projects begin as fleeting ideas captured in the moment, then develop into more considered pieces. Often, those experiments eventually find their way into her professional work.

Always looking to expand her visual language, Andrea has also embraced visual journalism and continues to explore new ways of telling and shaping stories. It is this ongoing willingness to observe, experiment and learn that keeps her practice moving forward.
