Bold, colourful and full of character—visual storytelling with personality
August 18, 2026
A Room of One's Own, Drew Shannon, for Renaissance Magazine.
Big characters, bold shapes and plenty of personality—Drew Shannon’s illustrations know how to make an entrance. A London, Ontario native now based in Toronto and represented by i2i Art Inc, Drew brings a storyteller’s eye to everyday encounters, finding the humour, humanity and unexpected details hiding in plain sight. Their vibrant, concept-driven work is playful without being lightweight, using colour, texture and clever perspectives to pull viewers into each story.
Working digitally, Drew creates illustrations that are energetic, expressive and often larger than life. Fluid lines, exaggerated angles and bold shapes give each composition a strong sense of movement, while a carefully considered colour palette helps guide the viewer through the image. Texture adds another layer, creating depth and balance while keeping the work visually rich.

At the heart of Drew’s practice is a genuine love of storytelling. Familiar situations become opportunities for visual invention, whether the subject is a road trip through time, dancing for better health or another everyday encounter ripe for interpretation. Humour is never far away, but neither is intention. Drew’s illustrations are designed to communicate as much as they are to entertain.

That balance becomes particularly compelling when the subject matter is more complex. Topics such as miscarriage, housing and immigration require a thoughtful approach, and Drew meets those challenges with sensitivity and a strong conceptual point of view. Rather than simply depicting the subject, they search for a visual idea that can make the story accessible, engaging and memorable.

Drew is also a natural collaborator. A visual problem solver at heart, they enjoy the back-and-forth of creative development, working with clients and creative teams to explore ideas, build characters and find unexpected solutions. Every assignment is an opportunity to push the concept further and discover a visual language that feels just right.
