Where Landscape, Art and Advertising Converge
July 28, 2026
From expansive landscapes to ambitious advertising campaigns, photographer Julian Calverley, represented in Canada by AhHa Reps, approaches every project with the same goal: creating imagery that leaves a lasting impression. His distinctive visual style has earned him international recognition and made him one of the UK's most sought-after commercial photographers. Backed by decades of experience, a collaborative production approach, and a passion for innovation, Julian continues to shape the evolving landscape of advertising photography while inspiring others through teaching and mentorship.

What inspires you?
Over the years, I have become more and more fascinated with the subject of inspiration. I actually find more inspiration studying paintings than I do photography. I also find inspiration for my personal work when I listen to music and read books. Just as importantly, I find inspiration through connection—connection with my childhood fears and memories, things that have stayed with me throughout my life.
Being receptive and being aware of what excites you is also important. As Rick Rubin says, "Excitement tends to be the best barometer." For anyone wishing to dig deeper into the world of inspiration and creativity, I highly recommend his book, The Creative Act: A Way of Being.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in your field?
In no particular order :-)
Work hard. Be yourself. Be on time. Make work for yourself. Make prints. Park your ego. Minimize time spent on your phone. Be open and receptive.
Who is your creative hero?
I don’t have a single hero. When I first started out as an assistant after leaving art college, I became interested in photography after seeing the work of John Claridge and Bob Carlos-Clarke. I realized then that much could be achieved in the darkroom and with the use of on-camera filters to craft a final image.
As someone who originally wanted to be an illustrator, I am interested in anything that adds a personal stamp to a photograph, and these photographers all showed me that was possible. I also adore the work of fashion and portrait photographer Paolo Roversi… his use of light and time, and the colour palettes he is drawn to. Even as a landscape photographer, I can look at Paolo Roversi’s work and be inspired to go out and create.
I am also drawn to the work, work ethic and writings of Ansel Adams. What he achieved in his time remains quite remarkable.
