British illustrator Migy Blanco, represented in North America by i2i Art Inc., has built a long-standing practice creating vibrant, bespoke illustrations for clients across editorial and commercial projects since 2001. Trained as a fine artist, he brings together an experimental approach to image-making, a strong sense of colour, and a clear ability to translate complex briefs into engaging visual solutions. For a special feature in NC State’s alumni magazine, art director Victoria Cumbee commissioned Migy Blanco to visually interpret a series of defining “firsts” from the university’s history. The concept spans breakthrough moments, celebratory achievements, and pioneering milestones that have shaped the institution over time.

Migy responded with a cohesive illustrated system built around a series of icons, figures, and scenes that come together in a richly layered composition. The result is a sophisticated collage where individual stories are carefully orchestrated into a unified visual narrative.

The retro-inspired direction adds a gentle sense of nostalgia, echoing the historical nature of the content while keeping the overall treatment fresh and contemporary. Each element is designed to be both stand-alone and part of a larger whole, inviting viewers to explore the work at multiple levels.
