Come for the Summer, Stay for the Illustration
September 17, 2026
Fly In Fly Out, Monika Melnychuk, for Up Here Magazine.
For illustrator Monika Melnychuk, represented by i2i Art Inc, a summer in Whitehorse became 20 years in the Yukon—and a creative life defined by loose lines, bold colour and a sharp sense of humour.
More than 25 years into her illustration career, Monika Melnychuk has learned that sometimes the best creative decisions happen when you stop making plans.
Her career has taken her from Toronto to Vancouver Island to Los Angeles. Then came Whitehorse. She arrived with a laptop and her dog, intending to stay for the summer. She decided to stick around for the winter, too. Twenty years later, she’s living the classic Yukon cliché: come for a month, stay for life.
The landscape may have changed, but the work remains unmistakably Monika. Loose lines. Bold colour. A sense of humour. Together, they form a visual language that gives her illustrations their energy and personality.

Her client list reflects the range of that approach, spanning publishing, editorial and commercial work. Harlequin Books, Purolator, McDonald’s and Weber Shandwick are among the brands and organizations she has worked with, alongside an array of editorial publications and book publishers.

It’s a practice built on versatility without sacrificing a recognizable point of view. Monika’s illustrations know how to communicate, but they don’t take themselves too seriously. There’s movement in the lines, confidence in the colour and usually a wink hiding somewhere in the frame.

Yukon Landmarks, Monika Melnychuk.
Away from the drawing board, her creative fuel comes in less conventional forms: mountain biking, an ongoing obsession with pizza and life with Walnut and Francis Bacon, her two decidedly “bonkers” dogs. Sixteen years after that first summer in Whitehorse, Monika has made the Yukon home—and built an illustration practice that feels every bit as individual as the place she calls home. Come for the summer. Stay for the work.
