Meet Dre Cheung: Where Colour Meets Calm

Applied Arts caught up with Andrea (Dre) Cheung, a multiple award–winning freelance illustrator and art director, represented by i2i Art best known for her tranquil, dreamy, and atmospheric work that celebrates life’s vibrancy through cinematic compositions, luscious colour palettes, and painterly realism. Dre pulls back the curtain on her creative process, sharing her sources of inspiration and practical advice for aspiring illustrators.

What inspires you?
I am deeply inspired by the joy and peace of mind that come with being immersed in breathtaking landscapes. The feeling of being small in a vast, ever-changing canvas of beauty is humbling and teaches me mindfulness. Painting allows me to express my gratitude for life with all its riches and rough edges.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in your field?
I would advise ensuring that you have enough funds and basic financial literacy to handle your day-to-day responsibilities while diving into the uncertain waters of commercial illustration. The instability can be tough before you get established. The mountain of rejections and side jobs is testament to the progress you’ve made- learn what you can and be proud of them. Make a point of remembering why illustrating makes you happy, and always stay curious and open to evolution.

How do you stay creative/inspired?
My inspiration comes from paying close attention to my surroundings. I take many reference pictures, and I often carry a notebook and pencil for spontaneous studies. My dilemma has never been a lack of inspiration, but rather deciding on a focus amid the overwhelming sea of possibilities. Going through plenty of loose sketches and unfinished pieces helps me clarify my next steps- each one, with their shortcomings, helps me see what works better.
