Meet I2I Art’s Kelsey Davis

Illustrator Kelsey Davis, represented by i2i Art, understands that strong visual storytelling lives in nuance. Splitting her time between Oklahoma City and Costa Rica, she brings a layered sensibility to her work – balancing playful colour, tactile textures and an instinct for emotional tone that makes her illustrations feel considered rather than decorative.

Davis isn’t content to sit still stylistically. Her practice continues to expand through motion studies and hands-on texture experimentation, evolving her static work toward something increasingly dimensional. It’s a trajectory many illustrators are navigating right now — where adaptability and movement are no longer add-ons, but expectations.

Visualizing The Book of I

In a recent collaboration with The Globe and Mail, Davis illustrated a review of The Book of I, set in 825 on a remote Scottish isle. The novel follows a monk, a mead-maker and a Viking grappling with the aftermath of a raid — a narrative that oscillates between brutality and tenderness.

That tonal tension became the assignment’s creative anchor. The reviewer’s framing of the book as “romantasy for men” underscored its emotional undercurrents — distrust dissolving into unlikely kinship — giving Davis space to interpret both the violence and vulnerability embedded in the story.

Expanding the Visual Vocabulary

Rather than defaulting to familiar territory, Davis leaned fully into a medieval aesthetic, incorporating Viking iconography and drawing inspiration from the symmetry and ornamentation of historic fabric tiles. The result marked a deliberate stretch — both stylistically and conceptually.

For Davis, the highlight wasn’t simply the subject matter; it was the opportunity to test a new visual rhythm. In an industry where longevity depends on evolution, that willingness to step outside a signature look is what keeps a portfolio sharp — and relevant.

As illustration continues to expand across platforms and formats, Davis’s willingness to explore new visual languages positions her practice firmly in step with where the industry is heading.
