Alison Morissette had three entries selected by the 2024 Student Awards Jury. While she is still completing her Bachelor in Graphic Design at the Université Lavel in Quebec City, she is proving she is a multifaceted designer. We reached out to understand her creative process and the impact that winning an Applied Arts Student Award has had.

Can you walk us through the specifics of creating this piece (specific winning piece)?

The idea behind this project was to create an environment that, at first glance, looks beautiful, inviting, and almost festive, but upon closer observation, one realizes that it is merely an illusion. Each time you look at it, you discover something new. I initially drew inspiration from monochromatic visuals and this time of year when many creatives are trying to uncover the new trendy color that will define the upcoming year. To create this element of surprise, I meticulously handmade and arranged each accessory using everyday objects (such as plastic bags, forks, paper, etc.). Additionally, I wanted to leave a strong visual imprint aimed at making an impact on people. When thinking about environmental issues, we often envision sad, polluted visuals. I wanted to break away from that traditional environmental visual framework because I believe people don’t want to feel like they are being sold something or that there's an attempt to raise their awareness, especially in advertising. It is by stepping outside the traditional model that we truly have the power to make a difference in the world of design.

How do you stay creative/inspired?

Contrary to what one might think, I rarely draw my inspiration from design books and platforms, although I enjoy consuming them daily. If all designers used the same sources of inspiration, there would be fewer original projects. Growing up in a small town surrounded by nature and beaches and spending my childhood playing in the forest and on the beach, I believe I developed a keen sense of observation that allows me to notice and analyze much of what happens around me. Having studied biochemistry and psychology before discovering my passion for design, I primarily draw my inspiration from biological phenomena, human behaviours, and social phenomena. By drawing inspiration from our surroundings, we never run out of ideas!

What are you working on professionally? Anything outside of the usual?

I am currently completing my Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design at Laval University in Quebec city, where I also hold a position as a teaching assistant. In addition to design, I have developed a passion for photography in recent years. I have recently set up and equipped a small photo studio at home, allowing me to work on personal graphic design and photography projects alongside my school assignments.

How has winning an Applied Arts Award impacted your business?

I believe that one of the most challenging aspects of working in design is being satisfied with our work. We operate in a design field that evolves so rapidly. Therefore, it's not uncommon to complete a project and feel that, after having observed it so much, it can start to seem ordinary. Winning an Applied Arts Award further confirmed for me that my work is relevant and that I belong in this industry.
