Taking the Pulse — Rajat Mitra
Winner, 2026 Applied Arts Young Blood Photography Awards
April 21, 2026

Rajat Mitra is quickly establishing himself as one to watch. A 2026 Applied Arts Young Blood Photography Awards winner for Shape of an Echo and a top graduate of Humber Polytechnic's 2025 class, he’s already building momentum—assisting on commercial sets while developing a thoughtful, versatile portfolio spanning studio, location, and still life.
We spoke with Rajat about inspiration, process, and staying true to his perspective.
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by quiet, in-between moments, emotions that aren’t always obvious. A lot of my influence comes from cinema, music, and everyday details: the way a ripple spreads across the water, how light interacts with an object.
What do you hope people say or think when they see your piece?
I hope viewers pause, even briefly—that the work evokes a feeling, and lingers with them.
What do you think is an issue in the world of photography?
There’s a tendency to prioritize trends and algorithms over originality. While visibility matters, nothing is more important than finding your own way of seeing and feeling.
What is your dream work environment?
A collaborative space where everyone is creatively engaged and open to experimentation. I value environments where ideas can evolve naturally.
