What can we say? When it rains, it pours. We had a slight production hiccup when getting our Fall issue to press and then the news of the impending Canada Post strike caused us to hold the issue back until we heard something more definitive with regard to the situation. Even though there was still no news on the postal disruption, we were ready to release the Fall issue, when a mechanical breakdown occurred at the final production stage. Some bad mojo!

Here is where we now stand: we expect to drop the Fall 2018 Student & Community Awards Annual in the mail over the next few days. Our much-anticipated, 180-page, Fall issue will soon be on its way to mailboxes and select newsstands! We value you as subscribers and contest entrants, and we sincerely apologize for this extended delay.

This issue contains winning work from two great awards programs. Our Student Awards recognize emerging artists studying visual communications at high school and post-secondary institutions. We also celebrate great professional work being produced at the local level across Canada with our 2nd annual Community Awards.

Also in this issue, writer Chris Powell delves into the growing trend – and emerging reality for many in our industry – of the side hustle. Be if out of necessity or desire, many artists are altering their 9 to 5 in favour of multiple or alternate gigs. Meet some the professionals who are making it work in Chris’ article ‘Do the (side) Hustle.’

The Fall issue also features our 12th annual Creative Futures Supplement, a special resource section showcasing leading colleges and universities offering visual arts programs. It’s just in time for Applied Arts’ Creative Futures Expo, our two-day school fair in November for high school students and others who are looking to study visual arts at a post-secondary level.

We thought it only fitting then to pay homage here to the amazing work being done in smaller communities and organizations from coast to coast in Canada. Feast your eyes on some of our Community Awards winners, shown below.
