Great blue heron harpooning a herring on the Charles River in Greater Boston. The Charles River was one of America's most polluted rivers from industry and sewage. After a world-renowned cleanup, the herring run has been restored, which draws herons, gulls, cormorants, osprey and even an occasional bald eagle to create a spring spectacle worthy of an official national wildlife refuge.
