The theme for PEN Canada’s 2016-2017 annual report is inspired by the novel Howard’s End, written by one of PEN’s founding members, EM Foster. In it, Foster gave the world a key to understanding the role of literature and love in the now famous dictum: “only connect!” PEN builds its mission around making connections: connecting writers to each other and readers to ideas in the fight to defend free expression.
