With the common themes of slavery and freedom, both of these books tell the powerful stories of two African Americans, Henry Bibb and Phillis Wheatley. They both lived during the nineteenth-century which inspired me to paint their portraits in the folk art style of the time. I used models for reference, but adjusted their features to closely match the research material provide to me by the publisher.
