Design Wreck

Waaaaay back in 2018 (a lifetime ago in COVID times, but the blink of an eye in a young career) we featured Student Award winner Marvin Veloso and his journey from unemployed Seneca College design grad to junior art director in seven days, all because he was spotted in our Student Awards Annual. The system works! You can read the whole piece here, but we wanted to share a recent project Marvin sent our way: his branding design project for the Ford Foundation Gallery in New York.

Since graduating from Seneca and his fortuitous Student Awards win, Marvin has gone on to graduate from York University (with a BA honours in Culture and Expression), and continue to design. His branding and design project for the Ford Foundation Gallery is focussed on the exhibition everything slackens in a wreck, curated by Andil Gosine and set to open on 1 June.

The exhibition features four artists Margaret Chen (Jamaica/Canada), Andrea Chung (USA), Wendy Nanan (Trinidad and Tobago) and Kelly Sinnapah Mary (Guadeloupe) who have a shared diasporic heritage and whose work reflects the metaphor in the exhibition’s title, namely the wreckage wrought by colonialism and the work done by those affected to answer this destruction “with art that invents its own subversive forms of order, rendering alternate visions of existence, and co-existence, imaginable, and therefore possible.”

It is a great thrill for us to see past award winners, especially Student Awards winners, doing such vital and fascinating work. You can read more about the exhibition here and see more of Marvin’s work here.
