Good Mail Day

Subplot Helps Canada Post Shine

There is something particularly wonderful about physical mail. The ritual of going to the mailbox, seeing an envelope, maybe it even has a handwritten address, but it most certainly has a stamp. That most functional piece of art and design, and, in some instances legal tender, are a little frame hung on the white walls of correspondence. A delightful tactile experience made all the more delightful if that stamp does some good beyond getting your letter to you.

The Canada Post Community Foundation’s fundraising stamp booklet marks the start of the Corporation’s annual fundraising campaign with a dollar from each booklet purchased going directly to the foundation. The foundation provides funding to local and national non-profit groups that serve the needs of children and youth. In 2020, 118 organizations delivering essential programs for children and youth shared over $1.3 million in funding from the Canada Post Community Foundation for Children.

This year’s stamp collection was designed by Vancouver-based Subplot Design Inc. and illustrated by Kim Smith, a New York Times best-selling illustrator of over 30 picture books. Kim has also worked on children’s video games, puzzles, animation, 3D displays, posters, magazines—and now a stamp!

Creative Director and Designer Roy White of Subplot Design Inc. says of the inspiration behind the stamp, “We wanted to create a stamp that was bright and magical, and that alluded to a sense of inspiration that the Community Foundation brings to children and youth all across Canada.”

The stamp itself is beautifully designed featuring elements of flight, light, magic, and wonder in the form of that summer staple: the firefly. Utilizing special phosphorescent inks used to highlight the fireflies’ abdomens that can be seen under black light, the stamp is sure to brighten the day of anyone who sees it or benefits from its charity.
