Pick a Door, Antimicrobial Door

Teck Resources and Vancouver-based agency Will demonstrate the benefit of a shiny surface.

We’ve all become hyper aware of surfaces, from countertops to door handles, we’ve wiped, washed and fogged with growing intensity this past year to help stop the spread. But what if the surface itself could mitigate the spread of bacteria and viruses? Cue copper, it’s not just for pennies.

Copper has naturally antimicrobial properties, actually killing 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. To help spread the awareness of copper’s unique bacteria battling properties, Teck Recourses enlisted Will, whose Founder and and Executive Creator Director Nick Richards is a 2021 Design Awards judge, to develop a campaign to help educate and engage the public about the potentials of atomic number 29.

“Now, more than ever, people are concerned about staying safe and healthy – particularly in public settings and shared spaces. When we learned about the efficacy of copper surfaces in killing viruses and bacteria, it seemed obvious to us to use those very spaces to help get our message across,” said Lisa Lebedovich, Creative Director at Will.

Will developed an experiential activation with KIDDO films that transformed a busy entryway into game of pick a door. The choice was between a regular door, and a copper door, which, as mentioned kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. We like those odds, and know which one we would pick. Turns out we’re not alone, as the unanimous choice was copper.

“Seeing the reaction of everyday people learning the health benefits of copper was incredibly positive. Their excitement and interest in Teck’s Copper & Health program confirms how important it is to advocate for the use of antimicrobial copper in public spaces, and to help make our communities safer,” said Jay Schlosar, Director of the Copper & Health program at Teck.

The campaign runs until mid-April and includes social, digital display and OOH across Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa driving folks to a landing page at CopperStopsTheSpread.ca where the public can learn more about the virus-killing properties of the metal that used to line the bottom of our purses and pockets.
