Tiny Home, Big Message
tiptap foundation takes tiny homes on educational tour to raise awareness and funds to end homelessness
June 9, 2021
Sometimes a big problem requires a small solution. To that end, the tiptap foundation, working with the community at A Better Tent City (ABTC), is launching a tap to give™ campaign designed by Toronto-based agency Wunderman Thompson Canada. The summer-long campaign will raise funds for the creation of tiny new homes, as well as support the crucial infrastructure needed to maintain them.
The campaign features an actual tiny home fashioned with a 3D moving billboard that will display educational material, a well as an optical illusion that will give passersby a look inside the home demonstrating how they can be used and the benefits they provide while simultaneously dispelling misconceptions about tiny homes. This educational component features stories and portraits of real residents of the ABTC photographed by Leah den bok, who spent the last six years capturing the unhoused as a part of a series entitled “Nowhere to call home.”
“Communities like A Better Tent City are a springboard to a better life.” says Mark Jordan, Managing Director at tiptap foundation. “Our role at tiptap foundation is to fuel those on the frontlines who are already making a difference. The team at A Better Tent City are making a real impact in the lives of the residents who choose to call that community their home.”
The tiny home will also feature contactless donation devices that will allow increments of $2, $5, or $10 dollars instantly. It will be going on the road until the end of August, stopping at Kitchener Market, UpTown Waterloo, TheMuseum as well as schools and churches in the community in the hopes of raising $500,000 to help build, maintain and operate A Better Tent City.
“It was important that we didn’t reinforce stereotypes associated with homelessness.” says Ari Elkouby, Executive Creative Director at Wunderman Thompson Canada. “We wanted to depict the benefit that comes from people’s donations and focus on the positivity associated with the funds generated.”
About A Better Tent City
A Better Tent City is a unique community of approximately 50 residents living in tents and small cabins set up as an alternative to the homeless shelter system. Residents are people who were previously homeless, and now have access to a path to housing and other supports through the community.
