Cédric Rossel is the co-founder and art director at the Swiss-based creative design studio WePlayDesign. The diverse agency touts their ability to cover all areas of creativity from art direction to type design, visual identity to motion design, interactive design to generative design, they do it all, and they do it all well. The award-winning studio focuses on work that promotes experimentation and a sense of play befitting their name.

Rossel took time away from his studio and teaching career to judge our Photography & Illustration Awards entries, combing through a myriad of amazing work. We wanted to return the favour and shine a light on one of WePlayDesign’s stunning projects. Rossel chose the visual identity they produced for the classical music concert festival Les Concerts du Mercredi 2019-20.

“If the visual result is interesting, the design process seems more interesting to us,” states Rossel. He elaborates that this particular project is a favourite, “because during this work we focused more on the work process than on the result. It is another way to work, but we like working that way because it pushes us to design things we never imagined in the first place.”

The visual identity WePlayDesign is truly unimaginably awesome. Using a generative design tool they developed, the inventive studio produced several thousand compositions from the same graphic material, which serves to highlight the diverse offerings of the festival as well as its eclectic audience. Using a machine as a creative collaborator allowed for WePlayDesign to keep that all-important to their process elements of surprise and improvisation, which are also essential elements to making music. The end result is a series of visual compositions that represent the emotions felt when listening to musical ones.
