TURNING THE TABLE: NOËL NANTON

2022 Applied Arts Design Awards judge Noël Nanton, typotherapy CD, shared their recent project for the Sandra Ainsley Gallery. The boutique creative direction and graphic design studio was commissioned to redesign the gallery’s website with the intent to provide the viewer with a visceral experience to the Art.

Sandra Ainsley Gallery is one of North America’s leading contemporary glass galleries. Founded in 1984 by Sandra Ainsley, the Toronto-based gallery has been recognized as a force in the international glass market. The Gallery represents the world’s leading artists working primarily in glass, as well as a roster of diverse, contemporary emerging artists.

In keeping with typotherapy's in-depth knowledge of the Sandra Ainsley Gallery brand and brand personality, typotherapy was commissioned to redesign the gallery’s new website. The redesign focuses on connecting with visitors by providing a user-friendly visual navigation which allows users to engage and quickly connect with the gallery’s content without the need to visit the site menu, resulting in a sophisticated, appealing, and timeless website.

What were some unique features of the campaign?

The concept for the new site revolved around a 'visual navigation' which allows visitors to engage and quickly connect with the gallery’s content without the need to visit the site menu.

What were the success stats or indicators?

Like many businesses, because the gallery had to close its doors during the pandemic lockdowns, the new site became the primary gathering place where the gallery can connect with their visitors. The site featured virtual studio tours, where visitors can engage with gallery artists from around the world, tour their studios, and take part in artist's talks. This became a unifying highlight for the site and accomplished the gallery's main goal - to engage with their visitors while their physical space remained closed.

- Can you give us some "peeks" behind-the-scenes?

On the landing page, as a part of the site's visual navigation, we created a unique feature to showcase the Featured Artists. 18 Featured Artists will appear randomly on the Home page from a list of artists that the gallery selects in the back-end. This dynamic feature helps engage visitors by seeing new arrangements of the Featured Artists when they re-visit the landing page, and ensures that the gallery does not appear to favour a select group of artists.

- Can you give us your opinion on what you think made this project a success?

Keeping with our long relationship with the Sandra Ainsley Gallery, we were able to build upon the brand and brand personality, resulting in a sophisticated, appealing, and timeless website.
