Turning The Table On Sara Panchaud
Inspired by Food, New work from our Photography & Illustration Award judge

Breaded OceanWise certified frozen haddock?...count us in! Sara Panchaud, 2024 Applied Arts Photography & Illustration Awards juror and Art Director at District Design Co, Halifax, NS, shared the process behind creating the packaging for client Afishionado.
Overview
Afishionado is a Halifax-based fishmonger selling sustainable seafood. Their products are OceanWise certified, sourced from fisheries that use best practices to minimize bycatch and reduce their environmental footprint.
Their most recent product line is a series of frozen, easy-to-prep fish. The first to be released is wild-caught, breaded haddock bites. We’ve deconstructed the Afishionado ‘A’ to create a pattern that will act as the launching pad for subsequent designs in the series. Each bag will use its own bold colours to stand out against traditional frozen fish counterparts in national grocery stores. These products are designed to appeal to the eco-conscious food lover, packaged within a fully recyclable bag.
Why was this particular project a fave?
Every project is more fun with a great client and a great product. Afishionado has always been such a pleasure to work with. They’ve trusted us every step of the way and are always willing to take some risks.
Can you give us some “peeks” behind the scenes?
The photo shoot for the product was particularly fun. We worked with a local photographer, Jess Emin (@eatwithjessie) who was super keen to help bring our colourful vision to life. Playing around with different ways to show the versatility of the product, as well as showcase the design of the bag to reinforce that these are not your average fish sticks was a good challenge.
Hungry anyone? We certainly are! Great packaging work Sara and team District Design Co!
