For the first time since my arrival, Venetian faces were eclipsed by masked figures frolicking in Piazza San Marco. The carnival, a farewell to flesh, enchants and hypnotizes: the crossroads of historical decadence and modern tourism. The city vanished into its water over night and reemerged disguised in a fusion of delusion and gaiety.
