When we take away the meaning of hate-filled words, we take away their power to harm us. Historically, Ballroom Houses sheltered and acted as alternative families for those who felt ostracized by conventional support systems and terrorized by hate and neglect. CUNTY magazine depicts Ballroom Houses as a symbol of reclamation created by people who have suffered the indignities of bias-related violence against gender non-conforming folks.
