Due to societal expectations that emphasize blending in over individualism, a great deal of young girls often find themselves silenced and belittled. The image Silencing Ella depicts this very same suppression of the adolescent girl's voice and calls for attention and resistance by encouraging young girls to speak out to showcase their opinions and gain cultural visibility.
