Leah Kwak, THE CITY, Illustration - Series, 2020 Student Awards winner.

Cities are a study in contrasts and Leah Kwak revels in the juxtaposition.

As the cities in our native Ontario prepare for another total lockdown, it is becoming harder and harder to remember what makes them such vibrant hubs. They are the interchange of humanity where dreams and relationships are grown and fostered, and sometimes dashed and broken. They are messy, imperfect, endlessly changing, and beautiful much like the humanity they house.

Sheridan College alumni Leah Kwak embraces the charming chaos of pre-COVID-19 city life in their 2020 Student Awards winning illustration series The City. Eschewing traditional perspective and proportion the illustrations are filled with vibrant colour and figures that recall the work of les Fauves freshened up for the 21st century.

It is fair to say that we all miss the moments depicted in Kwak’s series and hopefully we can take some solace in remembering the colourful, chaotic world we are waiting to reopen.

If you have a vibrant piece of illustration, or another piece of excellent student work in advertising, design, digital/interactive, or Photography/motion disciplines, submit it to the 2021 Student Awards. The deadline is: May 21, 2021.
