In anticipation of our 2019 Photography and Illustration Awards, we have interviewed some of our past winners to help inspire your work and encourage to you enter. These shorter inspiration pieces will appear on site throughout the coming weeks. The first winner in our series is Brooklyn-based Illustrator Ran Zheng, who won a Young Blood Award in 2018. Read on to learn more about Zheng's work and don't forget to enter our Awards here

“Colour was one of my biggest weaknesses,” Ran Zheng, a past Young Blood winner in our 2018 Photography and Illustration awards. “So I always put extra effort into getting the right colours for every piece.”

In the past year since Zheng’s piece 'Solar Eclipse Block Party’ appeared in our Photography and Illustration annual, she has been working as a freelance illustrator. Mostly creating promotional pieces. As the year progressed, Zheng entered more contests in hopes of getting her name out into the world – which paid off. “Once more people got to see my work, commissions increased,” she explains.

Zheng’s work can be described as “colourful and fun.” She tries to keep her work light and lively and fuses it with organic shapes and dynamic visual elements. She says that once the playful colour palette is added to a project, her “artistic language naturally comes through.” When she first starts a piece, she immediately picks out key words from the brief as starting points for the concept.

“My job is to simply deliver interpretations of things through my own visual language and there are no wrong answers. I’m grateful to have audiences who appreciate my works just for what they are,” she says.

The Early Bird deadline for our 2019 Photography and Illustration Awards is January 25. By entering before this date you can save on entry costs. The Awards will be open until the Final deadline on February 1. Regular pricing goes into effect on January 26.
