First pages of a graphic novel in the making
From Hamilton, Ont. illustrator Norm Lanting: “The attached samples are the first four pages of the first chapter of a graphic novel I’m trying to write and draw. I graduated from Sheridan [in Oakville, Ont.] in 1998 and got three pieces in the student category of Applied Arts. After that I did freelance work. For example, I did illustrations for ITP Nelson, a children’s education book for Scholastic, and some newspapers and magazines.
“I’m continually striving to improve my skills. I’ve been taking courses at a classical art school in Toronto (Academy of Art Canada, run by Harvey and Jeff Nelson), where I learned pencil tonal drawing in addition to painting. That’s what I’ve been using on these pages. My short-term goal is to use these as samples to get comic book or graphic novel work. The long-term goal is to actually create my own graphic novel. Meanwhile I’m open to freelance illustration assignments that come along.”
